Wal-Mart has announced that it will hold special in-store sales this Saturday, as it looks to gain an edge over rivals in the holiday sales season. The retailer held similar sales leading up to the holidays last year.

Wal-Mart says the sale will begin at 8 a.m. on 8 November, and will see offers such as a Sony PS3 video game console with a $100 gift card going for $399, a basic Compaq laptop for $298, and a Sanyo 46-inch LCD high-definition television for $898.

The move comes as retailers prepared for one of the worst holiday seasons in decades. Wal-Mart has said that it expects its shoppers to begin their gift-buying earlier this year, as they look to stretch their budgets. The retailer has been forced to start cutting prices on popular toys to attract cash-strapped shoppers looking for bargains.

Owners of Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 will be required to download the latest firmware in order to play the game title Resistance 2 online.

Sony this week released a new firmware update to Playstation 3 owners.

Firmware v2.52 is said to improve the playback quality of some PS3 format software and fix a text entry issue that occurs when using the on-screen keyboard, USB keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard with some PS3 format software.

Resistance 2 includes cooperative and competitive online modes. It is compatible with the new PS3 Bluetooth Headset.

Sony this week released Resistance 2 to U.S. retail in a $59.99 stand-alone SKU and a $79.99 Collector’s Edition SKU.

Resistance 2 is the first-person follow up to the PS3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man.

The latest version will include 300-ft enemies and new online multiplayer modes.

Retailer Amazon.com is concurrently offering $100 off the purchase of an 80GB PS3 and four select Warner Bros. Blu-ray titles.

Sony in Oct. said that sales for the PS3 are up 86 percent in year-over-year sales for the second quarter.

The company sold 2.43 million PS3 units between July and Sept. compared to 1.31 million units the year prior.

Sony has suffered a blow to its plans for a strong PlayStation 3 showing this holiday season with a delay to one of its marquee games.

LittleBigPlanet has been released to reviewers, but retail copies are now being held back while a part of the soundtrack considered of possible offence to Muslims is changed.

In a statement, Sony said it had been brought to its attention that one of the background music tracks contained two expressions that could be found in the Qur?an.

It said it was rectifying the situation and apologised for any offence it might have caused.

LittleBigPlanet, an innovative game where players can create and share their own levels, is a key title. Sony has emphasised that its games line-up will be the biggest lure for console buyers this season, rather than any price-cut strategy.

September US sales figures, released on Thursday by the NPD research firm, showed the PS3 trailed badly in third in September, with 232,000 PS3s sold. Microsoft?s Xbox 360, which benefited from a price cut on September 5, sold 347,000 units, while the Nintendo Wii sold 687,000.

LittleBigPlanet will be released a week late on October 27 in North America, but gamer sites are reporting a November 14 date for the rest of the world, meaning a two or three week delay there.

In the meantime, Nintendo will release a key title for the holidays on Monday in Wii Music. It represents the third leg of its strategy to produce categories of all-ages activity games. following Wii Sports and Wii Fit. Using the existing motion-sensing controllers, Wii Music allows gamers to play along to more than 50 songs, choosing from more than 60 instruments.

Wii Fit, which uses the balance board accessory, sold more than 500,000 units in the US in September, helping to boost console sales as well. Nintendo hopes Wii Music will have the same effect over the next two months.

The Wii has been a decisive winner so far in the next-generation console race and its success has only been impeded by the console selling out at peak buying times,

Denise Kaigler, Nintendo?s head of corporate affairs in the US, told me this week Nintendo boosted monthly production by a third to 2.4m units worldwide in April and aimed to have increased numbers available at retail this holiday season.

?We know more consumers will be able to find them, and we?ve no desire to have shortages, but we won?t know till January just how successful we?ve been,? she said.

There’s no doubt Fallout 3 came into its release week with a head of steam after nothing but positive previews and the lingering success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

In no way could we predict Bethesda would ship a total of 4.7 million copies for Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC for the game’s opening week of sales.

Many of those copies moved, too, with total week one sales topping an impressive $300 million. Not even The Dark Knight boasts those kinds of opening week numbers.

With this kind of success, it will be difficult not to select Fallout 3 as game of the year.

The biggest addition to the PlayStation 3 version of BioShock are the “Challenge Rooms,” a feature that publisher 2K Games has revealed will be released as downloadable content on November 20.

For those still in the dark, the “Challenge Rooms” are essentially BioShock-themed puzzle areas complete with timer and tasks that force you to use the skills you may or may not have learned through the course of the single-player game.

The updated version of BioShock hits shelves on October 21.

While it’s certainly true that Nintendo continues to lead the console war by a gigantic amount, many publishers believe the PlayStation 3 is capable of closing the gap over the next few years. Heck, the PS3 has already narrowed the gap significantly and is creeping up on the Xbox 360.

According to GameDaily, Activision has faith in Sony’s machine. During a conference call after the publisher’s third-quarter earnings report, Activision CEO Mike Griffith talked about his company’s expectations for console growth, and he had some encouraging things to say about the PS3. He said he thinks the Xbox 360 will grow by another six or seven million units for this calendar year, but the PS3 will grow by another eight million units. Of course, Griffith says the Wii will continue to sprint along and sell another 15 million units this calendar year, but that comes as no surprise to anyone. He has high hopes for the handhelds as well, but again, it’s nothing earth-shattering. But Activision is arguably the world’s largest publisher, and to have them projecting good results for the PS3, that’s undeniably good news for owners of Sony’s next-gen machine. And they’ve got a ton of games in the hopper, so the more they’re willing to see the PS3’s success, the better the prospects are for the future.

We’ve heard similar things from publishers like EA, where they believe the PS3 has a lot more potential in terms of both technical achievement and sales. And with great exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance 2 leading the way, the path continues to be blazed.

In case you've been looking for another reason to run through the halls of Rapture, 2K Games has been hard at work preparing their upcoming downloadable content for BioShock, which will launch tomorrow. According to a post from Keith Shetler, Associate Producer at 2K Boston on the PlayStation.Blog, the PS3 Challenge Rooms Add-on Content pack will add three separate puzzle rooms which will task players with trying to rescue Little Sisters from seemingly impossible odds. These include surviving waves of Splicers with limited equipment or fighting a Big Daddy without weapons. Shetler also announced that the Challenge Room pack will come with an added bonus in the form of New Game Plus, which will let players restart a game with any weapons, abilities and inventory that have been collected from previous completed games. That should definitely help players looking to gain the Brass Balls or I Chose the Impossible Trophies. The Add-On Content pack will be available tomorrow for $9.99.
