Hot Chili Peppers frontman discusses a new festival and the state of his band

Anthony
Kiedis is keeping busy without his Red Hot Chili Peppers ("We're disbanded
for the moment," he tells Rolling Stone -- for more on the band's
year-long break, keep reading). The California dad recently pulled together Bob
Dylan, the Raconteurs and more bands for Pittsburgh's New American Music
Festival, which takes place August 8 and 9. Kiedis dialed up RS to
explain what exactly a festival curator does, where the RHCPs are at and
whether he's putting any thought into the ever-evolving business end of the
music biz.

Tell us
about the New American Music Festival. I've heard you're curating and
I've heard you're hosting. Which is right?

Curating is more accurate, but I guess curation is a word that could be defined
differently by many. It's kind of vague. You think of it a little bit more in
term of the visual-art world.

How did
you get the job?

Basically they came to me saying, "Do you want to curate a show?" And
I've known people that have curated festivals before and I thought, "Hmm.
Is it real? Do I really get to choose the music? Because if I do, I'm in."
I was listening to a lot of very exciting music.

I thought, "What a great
opportunity for me to basically design a concert for myself, that I would want
to go to." So I kept asking, "Do I really get to choose the music?
Are there strings attached?"

I didn't really want to get into something
where I signed on and then suddenly they flipped the switch on me and it wasn't
real. And they were incredibly gracious about allowing me to have the final say
in choosing.

How did
you find the experience? Was it difficult?

It's not as easy as it sounded. It was kind of an interesting experiment
because at first I was kind of like a kid, who wanted what he wanted, when he
wanted it. And then I realized, "Okay, that's just not how this
works." I'm an absolute die-hard LCD Soundsystem fan and they're one of
these bands that are completely dismantled and some of them are in England and
some of them are on tour with other bands.

I got to engage in e-mail
conversation at length with James Murphy, and that turned out to be a really
incredible experience. He is an excellent human being and is very smart and I
have to say, his music gets to my good nerve. For every kind of door that
closed, another wild or totally fascinating door opened, like Bob Dylan.

all this Red Hot Chili Pepper thing start for me?

I was
away skiing with a bunch of girly friends and there was MTV in the hotel - none
of us had it at home, so whenever we weren't either
on the piste or in the bar it was on. This was winter 91/92 and 'Give
it Away' was pretty much on a loop. One of the girls had a thing with a ski
instructor - I left with a far more enduring love!

The
well-known Amsterdam Tattoo King Henk Schiffmacher and the Rock Palace music
store have produced and designed a very special and unique drumkit: a Tattoo
Art Custom Drum Kit, designed for Chad Smith -drummer of the most popular
rockband in the world: The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Henk Schiffmacher and the Red Hot Chili Peppers

The
friendship between the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Henk Schiffmacher dates from
the late 80s. The then unknown band came to Amsterdam where Henk gladly
introduced the band to the Amsterdam nightlife. Schiffmacher inked several
tattoos on lead singer Anthony Kiedis, bass player Flea, guitar player John
Frusicante and ofcourse drummer Chad Smith.

'Pimp my drums!"

In
Autumn last year Chad Smith, Henk Schiffmacher and Cesar Zuiderwijk -drummer
for the Dutch band The Golden Earring- were having dinner at the Amsterdam
Amstel hotel. Chad Smith - who was already familiar with Schiffmacher's tribal
and tattoo artwork asked him if he could design a drumkit for him. Chad
shouted: "You need to PIMP MY DRUMS!" Henk
Schiffmacher accepted the challenge immediately and asked Cesar Zuiderwijk
where he could find an unfinished drumkit to base his artwork on.

Cesar Zuiderwijk -who has been a
big name in the Dutch music scene for years and is a nationally and
internationally acclaimed drummer - is closely connected to Rock Palace so he
was able to order the basic kit from them. The Japanese manufacturer was able
to honor the special request and supplied an unfinished drumkit and the first
preparations were started....

A rhythmic masterpiece

All
drum shells have been painted with classic tribal and tattoo art symbols and
subjects. The drum kit is a compilation of well known artworks by Henk
Schiffmacher. The different designs form a complete coherent set in their own
unique way. Many images refer to Chad
Smith's life, like a tattoo is often also a symbol for a certain event or
special moment.

The
drumkit has been designed to Chad Smith's exact technical requirements and
specifications. The shells have been painted with a basic layer of varnish and
then painted on by Henk Schiffmacher with a special acrylic marker. To protect
the artwork three layers of glossy paint have been added and after that the
drumkit was assembled by Rock Palace's specialists.

On world tour with the RHCP

Chad
Smith will actually be using this drumkit during the next Red Hot Chili Peppers
world tour. The unique tattoo drumkit will travel the world with the band. The
artwork will get extra media attention throughout this time. Undoubtedly because
it will be used extensively, the drumkit with Chad's life story on it will
suffer many dents, scratches and other scars. The unique character of the
drumkit will be enhanced by this and it will contribute to its value.

Orange Babies

When he
accepted this challenge Schiffmacher had one condition: Chad Smith has to
return this drumkit to him after using it for the Red Hot Chili Peppers world
tour. The drumkit will then be auctioned off and all proceeds will be donated
to Orange Babies; a foundation dedicated to helping pregnant African women who
suffer from HIV and their babies. Primarily the money is collected to buy
medication to ensure these mothers will have healthy babies. Orange Babies is
very much aware of the vastness of the AIDS problem, but they don't think
waiting around for something to happen is an option. Henk Schiffmacher is an
official ambassador for Orange Babies.

Official release

The
Tattoo Art Custom Drumkit is presently showcased in our store. People visiting
the shops can admire the kit in the music store's display window. The official release
will soon take place in the store, which will be kept open in the evening for
that occasion. Many musicians, friends, artists and famous Dutch people will
make an appearance. Chad Smith, Cesar Zuiderwijk
and Henk Schiffmacher will celebrate their friendship and love for music and
tattoo art. The date will remain a secret for now...

Bring That Beat Back

The California Music Project fights
the decline of music in California schools

BONNIE RAITT, Los Lobos and Flea (of the Red Hot Chili
Peppers) recently lent their name and music to a single cause, producing a CD
and donating time to tackle an issue important to them.

What cause would bring such diverse, well-known artists
together? Nothing less than the decline of music education.

Troubles began unfolding when the No Child Left Behind
(NLCB) act was imposed upon California's schools. The Bush-mandated act
requires standardized testing in public schools, such that they gain or lose
funding based solely on reading and math test scores. While those subjects are
important, the act dismissed not only the importance of science and history,
but also the challenges of immigrant student populations and the effects of
disproportionate district funding.

It also nearly ushered music education out of existence,
and the negative effects emerged quickly. Valuable programs and learning strategies
were tossed aside in order to prep for the onslaught of state exams. Music
education was hit hard, silencing young musicians and their classrooms.

But NCLB's stranglehold didn't go unnoticed and has been
fervently addressed by the California Music Project (CMP), a nonprofit
organization of educators, parents, artists, musicians and students from
diverse backgrounds who are pushing back against this decline of music
education.

CHUGGING ALONG

Leslie Bixler's charming children's songs explore the transcendent power
of cadence on her forthcoming CD, "Rhythm Train."

Featuring the
talents of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, the lighthearted concept
album is based on the ultimate rhythmic vehicle: the train.

"Chad's son
loves trains," says Bixler, "which was part of the album's
inspiration."

Like an aural locomotive, the songs traverse various musical
terrains to give kids a sense of the sheer joy of rhythm and movement.

"It's the most fun I've ever had working with a drummer," says Bixler.

Ed Roth, along with Motor City bass ace Kevin Chown, are now striking out on their own,
together as one, in what is easily one of the most accomplished and exciting instrumental
outfits to emerge some time: Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats.

Four master
musicians joining forces, each bringing to the table a unique background and a
plethora of influences, creating a new sonic experience that fuses everything
from classic rock, old school funk and 70's R&B, to vintage fusion and even
oriental flavors.

The group's forthcoming debut album
sounds as uncalculated and spontaneous as are the MEATBATS' accidental
beginnings: "Whenever I would jam with Ed and Chad at Glenn Hughes
rehearsals, we would mess around and warm up with some Jeff Beck kind of stuff",
recalls Kollman. "One day Chad said, "hey, we should do something
like this!" Next thing you know we're in the studio making a record! I
called my buddy (Kevin) Chown on the day of the recording session. Kevin came
in and saved the day - we got five tunes down that first day! And the rest is
history!"

Hagar to hit studio with guitar hero Joe Satriani

TORONTO - Sammy Hagar has a new
supergroup that includes a virtuoso guitarist and a fellow Van Halen alumnus,
but fans eager to see the so-called Red Rocker sing alongside the six-string
hero he's most famously associated with shouldn't hold their breath.

It seems a peace settlement in the war of wills between
Hagar and Eddie Van Halen could be years away, if it arrives at all.

"I love Eddie, but we don't love each other,"
Hagar said during an interview.

"I heard that he got cleaned up again. Hopefully he
stays that way and doesn't die, because before we both die we have to be
friends again.

"But like I said, people have to be level-headed and
have to be healthy before you can settle a feud."

Eddie Van Halen's battles with drug and alcohol addiction
are legend, marring past shows with Hagar and delaying the start last year of a
reunion tour with original singer, and Hagar's predecessor, David Lee Roth.

Instead of waiting for that friendship to be
repaired, Hagar has teamed with acclaimed guitarist Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili
Pepper drummer Chad Smith, and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony.

The
group, code-named Chickenfoot, will enter the recording studio just before
Labour Day.

"We've written eight, nine songs. We just got to go
in the studio Sept. 1," Hagar said.

"When people hear the music, it's Led Zeppelin. It's
as good as that. I know that's a mighty bold statement... We could rival
Zep."

American Eagle
Outfitters, Inc announced its plans for a two-day summer music festival in
Pittsburgh, PA this August 8 and 9. The New American Music Union festival
combines some of the most innovative and popular artists with 15 of the country's
best college bands. The lineup includes Bob Dylan and His Band, The Raconteurs,
Gnarls Barkley, The Roots, Spoon, The Black Keys, Black Mountain, The Duke
Spirit, NASA and Tiny Masters of Today and more to come.

American
Eagle Outfitters created this festival to give college bands a national
platform and the opportunity to share the stage with the artists that most
inspire them. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 16 at 10 a.m. Eastern time.
Student tickets are an affordable 25 dollars General admission tickets are 50 dollars.
