"The PiperJet has flown 12 times now," Piper spokesman Mark Miller told AVweb on Tuesday. The jet, which flew for the first time just last month, is undergoing tests to explore stability, control and handling throughout the flight envelope. In the coming months, it will typically be flown for one to three weeks, and then down for one to three weeks for systems upgrades and the installation of additional flight test equipment, Miller said. "We are just finishing a two-and-a-half-week flight test block and are about to go into a two-week maintenance/upgrade block to get ready for flutter testing and put paint stripes on the airplane," he said. Piper says the jet will hold six or seven seats, cruise at 360 knots, and carry 800 pounds of payload with full fuel and a range of 1,300 nautical miles.

Can someone recommend a "hole duplicator" tool that would work especially well for drilling the holes in the rear skirt? I'm terrified of getting this wrong and ending up with extra holes in my plexi.
I'm thinking of doing a fiberglass rear skirt - seems many people have had very good success with this.

Is there anybody out there who actually enjoys fiberglassing? I guess composite builers must at least tolerate it...

Greetings,

I fly in the Minneapolis area, and of course, there will be some big TFR's around here in a couple weeks. However, they already have been intermittently showing up on the XM weather (I have an Anywhere Map system). A week ago Sunday, I was flying back towards the Minneapolis area, not really paying any attention to the Anywhere system (weather was clear). I looked down at the Anywhere system, as to my horror, I was just about to bust into the big ol' TFR. Well, this gets your attention, so I peeled off and headed away from it while I checked into things. I had checked the computer in the morning, no TFR's. I called the tower of my destination and asked them if anything had popped up. Nope. Ok, so someone at XM or upstream had jumped the gun. I flew again 4 days later, no sign of these mystery TFR's. However, again when returning a couple days later they were there again.

Question - has anyone else seen this "too early" warnings of TFR's? I know you Texas types have to deal with these airspace grabs a lot, have you seen this early display?

Thanks.

I have about half a day to burn in the Portland area on an upcoming business trip. Is it possible to visit Vans? Is there anything to see there/will they show you around? I'd like to see the place and am curious as to what they do there... Also, I've still never flown in an RV even though I'm building one, do they do that there?
Since I can now go either to vernier or friction - Which one for the throttle?

Both have pros and cons.

Most of the posts from folks with flying RVs tend to be about how much fun they are to fly, how efficient, how wonderful they are for travel and blah blah. Well, yeh, that stuff is true, but not all is peaches and cream.

It is true that some people actually like building these things, not me, and maybe those same people like working on them, again not me. About three months before the condition inspection I start dreading it. My airplane is in its tenth year of flying and most of the issues I have found have been discovered during normal maintenance, like during tire changes, while washing, or just by being intimately familiar with the airplane and noticing changes. Still, it is required and I have found some problems during these inspections.

The Carlsbad climate is warm and I have tried to do the inspections in cooler months. This year, circumstances pushed the inspection to August, not a cool month. My inspection facility is an uninsulated, dirty, tee-hangar with a west facing door. I try to work mostly in the mornings but it is still pretty miserable doing a lot of the work, especially contorting around in the cockpit, removing panels and cramming myself back in the baggage compartment and going upside down to get under the instrument panel all the while with pools of sweat dripping off my face.

I finished last Sunday and later in the day decided to take a dusk flight. With everything clean and tuned and with the yearly tire inflation done, the airplane just seemed to taxi and fly smoother, you know like how a newly waxed car runs better.

I climbed out in smooth air over Carlsbad as the lights on the softball fields were coming on, the players appearing as crawling ants on the diamonds. We didn't get the forecasted thunderstorms, but there they were in the distance with the flashing light show. The pedestrian lights lining the river were reflecting on the water and there were a few boats moving along between the bank-defining lines of light.

I flew on north of Carlsbad toward the big sink hole, now around 400 feet wide, which I hadn't been able to see in over two weeks, in fact no one has seen it who doesn't have access to an airplane. By the time I got up there I could just make it out in the deepening dusk.

Heading back to the airport the lights of the nearby towns were emerging from the sea of darkness, evoking for me one of my most memorable flights, back in about 1967, when I had had my private license for one day and made a night formation flight with the examiner from the day before in the other airplane. It was the first time I got to see just how stunningly beautiful a night flight over the desert can be with the towns showing up over a hundred miles away.

The wind for landing on runway 8 was going to be about 10 knots, 30 degrees off the nose. The downwind leg is flown facing the Guadalupe Mountains and NO lights at all. I am making a lot of references to the attitude indicator as that is the only horizon I have, although the weather is clear and a hundred. Since I don't have recent night experience and tend to botch the landings when that is the case, I decide to do a rare-for-me wheel landing using the glassy water technique of just setting up a very slow rate of descent until touching, a neat option of the tailwheel configuration.

On short final I have power on in a slip and am facing back to the east now as a huge orange moon just starts peeking out from the clouds on the horizon. Lower, lower, then squeak on the upwind tire, then squeak on the downwind tire then hold it straight as the tail settles. As I turn off the runway I pop the tip-up canopy into the vent position, taxi to the hangar, shut off all the lights and the engine then sit for a while in the darkness.

Yes, the annuals are pretty miserable and I hope I get to keep doing them for many years!

KOSH Report, G3ignition systems were over whelmed at Airventure 2008 with interest of the new G3ignition, an interfaced-based electronic ignition control system. The reported fuel economy out of the group was 12% better in the RV-6 over the RV-4 that was equipped with standard slick magnetos. Both aircraft were running the same engine configuration. Also in the group of 4, there was a 2% better fuel economy over the other electronic ignition system that was in another RV-4. I had a blast meeting all of you that stop by and would like to thank everyone once again.
I bought a Dynon Heated Pitot and Gretz Aero Mounting Bracket Kit from Aircraft Spruce. But I have received the Gretz kit without hardware and Instruction, so I send two mail from different account to Gretz Aero asking for instruction on PDF to be send by mail to me, about hardware I wish the Instruction comes with a hardware list so maybe I could find some of the parts here in Chile(not easy) or buy the from Van's. The problem is that I am ready to close the left wing and I just need to install that pitot and I haven't received any answer from Gretz (I have wait just 2 days).
So if anyone have the instruction manual and hardware list I will appreciate your help.
1. anyone have a used sl40 that you would sell?

2. anyone have a repair manual I could rent, barrow, buy?

3. anyone have a really-really good buy on a new sl40!

It squeals on transmit on our avionics shop test bench just like it does in the 9A. We had it connected to a signal strength meter and watched the needle flop back and forth on transmit. The squelch seems to increase by itself so we can't receive. The intercom seems to work just fine.
Hello all,
This is a request to all of you European RV builders ( especially RV 6/7/8 ) for information concerning the certification procedures in your respective countries for your completed RV plane.
I would like to know what information is required on the airplanes design and performance to satisfy your certification authorities of the airplanes compliance with an acceptable airworthiness standard and most importantly, how and where did you gather the necessary information.
The aviation authorities here are requesting that I supply the above information in order to accept/certify my quickbuild RV7.So I'm sure you can well imagine that I'm doing my utmost to amass as much information as possible and so avoid having an RV7 shaped white elephant parked in my garage!!
I am aware that the UK CAA/PFA/LAA has a somewhat similar requirement for detailed information of " compliance" before accepting a new airplane type for certification but I have not been able to access this as yet.

All information and help will be much appreciated.
Should you wish to contact me directly my e-mail address is --
